‘Fuming’ Fake or Fortune viewers have A LOT of complaints as guest’s painting exposed as fake

FAKE or Fortune fans had a lot to say about the latest edition of the show.

The BBC One programme, fronted by Fiona Bruce and Phillip Mould, tackles whether pieces of art and antiques are really what they say they are or if they are just cheap knock-offs.

The results can pay off for the guests who bring in their items for thorough appraisals and valuations while for others it can often fall flat if they discover they have a replica copy of something rather than the real thing.

In the latest episode of the show, Fiona and Phillip were investigating a painting of a landscape of a French village with a river running through it with it being purported to be a founding painting of the 19th century impressionist movement, the British artist Alfred Sisley.

American owners, Kim and Chuck, revealed they bought the picture at an auction near Chicago and they thoroughly believe it to be a real piece.

However, past attempts to authenticate the work of art have failed as the Sisley committee refused to acknowledge any authenticity.

But the Fake or Fortune team were on it - determined to find new evidence in a bid for the committee to change their mind as if its real could be worth more than £250,000.

Fans of the show expressed their dismay over the way the Sisley committee communicated with the team however with many expressing their own thoughts on what was happening.

One wrote: “I’m sure the Sisley committee are entirely honorable and incorruptible. #FakeOrFortune”

A second shared: “Yes why do they appear to consider the decision of the 'secretive' committee to be incontrovertible? #FakeorFortune”

Another fumed: “No wonder the Sisley Committee are so secretive about who and where they are.  Anyone else still fuming with them an hour later? #fakeorfortune”

While a fourth shared: “Where is the other 'genuine' one is what I want to know. From the image could just be a committee figment #fakeorfortune”

At the end of the episode a disheartened Fiona announced to the couple that they had received a letter from the Sisley committee which confirmed they stood by their previous decision and were unable to confirm its validity dealing a devastating blow.
