The property guru said she broke down when told she had it too.

At the weekend, she cut off her hair with the help of her four children and artist husband Graham

Sarah, 50, was ten when she lost her mother Ann.

She said: “The nurse was so sweet and they were really nice to me but I thought, ‘You don’t understand. I’ve waited 40 years to hear those words’.

“I knew I was going to hear them one day.”

Property Ladder star Sarah, who revealed her diagnosis in a newspaper interview, began chemotherapy last week and faces a mastectomy and radiotherapy.

Inside the life of Sarah Beeny's husband Graham Swift

She was told she had an 80 per cent chance of beating the disease — diagnosed three weeks ago after she found a lump.

And Sarah said she would continue to work and was focused on a Channel 4 series and book she has planned for later this year.

At the weekend, she cut off her hair with the help of her four children and artist husband Graham

She said: “Graham was trying to cut it nicely, but the boys — well, they’re not going to be famous hairdressers. They said I looked like Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones.

“I mean, she’s beautiful so I was sort of flattered but my hair is about a centimetre long in some places and an inch long in others.”

Sarah, who also presented Help! My House Is Falling Down and Sarah Beeny’s New Life In The Country, said she would be candid with her boys, partly as she was not told about her mum’s condition as a girl.

She said: “My eldest came in and I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it.

“He said, ‘Are you all right? You haven’t got cancer or something, have you?’.

“I said, ‘Um, I have, actually’. He said, ‘Sorry?’. I said, ‘Yeah, I have’.

“Then the others came in, we had a little chat and it was kind of fine.

“They just said, ‘You will be honest?,’ and I said, ‘I promise you that I’m going to be around for a jolly long time yet’.” Sarah was deeply affected by her mother’s death, saying it made her impatient and eager to grasp every opportunity.

She added: “It has opened a tinderbox of stuff that I’ve swept under the carpet for a really long time.”

Sarah — who lives in Somerset and is mum to Billy, 18, Charlie, 16, Rafferty, 14, and 12-year-old Laurie — was inundated with messages of support after announcing her diagnosis.
