Devastated Simon Cowell pays tribute to ‘charismatic’ Darius Campbell Danesh after his shock death
SIMON Cowell has paid tribute to Darius Campbell Danesh today following the news of his shock death.
The pair grew close after Darius auditioned for Pop Idol back in 2001, while Simon was a judge and he was won over by the Scottish singer’s personality.
The music mogul said in a statement tonight: “I first saw Darius on television over 20 years ago and I got to know him really well.
“He was charismatic, funny and just a great person to be with.
“His passing, for someone so young, is an absolute tragedy and my heart goes out to his family and friends”.
Darius, who burst onto the scene with his memorable rendition of Britney Spears' Baby One More Time for his audition on the talent show, came in third, while Gareth was in second place and Will Young won the competition.

The star’s family announced today that he was found dead in his US apartment on August 11.
During his life time, Darius spoke about his bond with Simon and even based one of his theatre characters on him.
In 2011, speaking about reprising the role of Chicago's scheming lawyer Flynn, he said he had based his portrayal of the character on his old mentor.
Darius starred opposite Ugly Betty star America Ferrera in the musical set in prohibition-era Chicago, and said: "He's the consummate businessman and a wonderful guy and there's a lot of Simon Cowell in Billy Flynn in terms of the way he approaches things and I recognise that in terms of the character."

He credited Simon with persuading him to take on the role in Chicago in the first place.
He said: "I'm incredibly grateful for the experiences I've had and all the opportunities that it opened up and to be able to call Simon Cowell a friend and to be able to have dinner with him."
Simon isn't the one one who had paid tribute to the much-loved singer.
Gareth Gates, 38, revealed his heartbreak over losing his “big brother” Darius, who he forged a strong bond with during his time in the singing contest in 2002.
Gareth said in a statement tonight: "I can’t quite believe the news of my dear friend Darius passing. I’m heartbroken.
"Darius took me under his wing during our time in Pop Idol, like a big brother; always looking out for me and for that I thank you my friend.
