When Big Brother UK launched on Channel 4 in 2000 there was a 24/7 live feed, which could be watched by fans at any time of the day or night.

The broadcaster faced backlash when it was axed in 2009 – promoting Channel 4 to reinstate the live feed for its final year.

Big Brother aired for eleven series on Channel 4, followed by one final special edition, Ultimate Big Brother.

Channel 5 acquired the rights to the series, and relaunched it in 2011 – again, without the live feed.

Whereas over in America, it’s been going strong for the duration of the show’s 18-year run.

Big Brother once split the housemates into “luxury” and “grubby” areas in an experiment about class.

It forced them to send contestants to live and sleep in separate classes.

Playing off both sides of the house inspired fierce competition and terrible rows.

Bigger cash prize

Big Brother UK offers contestants a £100,000 prize if they make it through to be crowned champion.

But overseas, the cash prize is even bigger.

In the US, stars could end up winning $250,000.

Offering more money has proved to be a success, with fewer people walking out in between evictions and more ambition for game-playing.

Be more American

The US version of Big Brother includes a strict format with a Head of Household assigned at the start of each week after a competition.

The winner is given luxuries including their own bedroom – and gets to decide who’s up for eviction that week.

There’s also the ‘power of veto’ and a secret ballot eviction – with the head of household in charge of making the tie-breaking decision.
