Big Brother WILL return in 2023 as ITV bring show back after five year hiatus

ITV will bring Big Brother back next year — confirming its return with a teaser in an ad break during last night’s Love Island final.

The Sun exclusively revealed four months ago that the cult reality TV show was set to be rebooted after a five year hiatus.

The returning series will air on ITV2 and on new service ITVX, with all the action once again happening in a purpose-built house with nominations, public votes and live evictions.

Last night’s ad showed a new version of the iconic Big Brother eye, but made up of smaller ITV2 logos.

The original reality series was first shown on Channel 4 and then moved to Channel 5.

ITV2 Controller Paul Mortimer said: “This refreshed, contemporary new series of Big Brother will contain all the familiar format points that kept viewers engaged and entertained the first time round, but with a brand new look and some additional twists that speak to today’s audience.

“We’re beyond excited to bring this iconic series to ITV2 and ITVX where it should especially engage with our younger viewers.”

ITV has yet to say who will host the new version of the show, which has previously been fronted by Davina McCall on C4, then Emma Willis and Rylan Clarke on C5.

The reboot will be one of the shortest series in the history of Big Brother, with the whole process lasting just six weeks.

Previously, most series have been at least seven weeks long, with some stretching to 13 weeks.

ITV also moved to allay any fears the show could start to look too much like Love Island, which was born out of the raft of reality TV shows inspired by Big Brother.

Unlike the ITV2 dating show, which tends to only have beautiful teens and twenty-somethings, producers say they will have “A new cast of carefully selected housemates, from all walks of life.”

Big Brother started in the Netherlands in 1999 but was quickly brought over to Britain.

The show went on to be sold to 64 countries from Mongolia to Brazil.
