Fans have been preparing themselves for the return of some of Neighbours' most beloved characters, and many were left in floods of tears after watching the final episode.

While British fans have to wait until Friday evening to see what happens, the plot of the finale is quickly spreading on the Internet.

The episode opens with Stefan Dennis' character Paul Robinson saying: "Ramsay Street...It’s just an ordinary street in an ordinary neighbourhood … where extraordinary things tend to happen.”

Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne) is then seen sadly looking around the street, seeing that every house apart from her own is for sale, after her neighbours decide to move on, for various reasons.

Meanwhile Toadie (Ryan Moloney) is preparing to marry his fiancee Melanie, and he receives well wishes from lots of his pals via Zoom.

These include Margot Robbie as Donna, Kym Valentine as Libby Kennedy, Delta Goodrem as Nina and Jesse Spencer as Billy Kennedy.

Elsewhere, Natalie Imbruglia returned as Beth for a scene with Holly Valance as Flick.

Fans already knew that other iconic characters were returning for real, and Guy Pearce soon rocked up as Mike Young.

Viewers were delighted to see him rekindle his romance with Jane Harris (Annie Jones) and confirm fan speculation that Sam (Henrietta Graham) is his daughter.

As if that wasn't enough, a green mini then pulls into the street with Especially For You playing on the radio.

Out hop Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, back together as Scott and Charlene, with Kylie sporting her characters classic denim.

In a nod to how she first appeared on the show, Charlene breaks into Harold's house because no one is home, before things move to the wedding reception on the street.

Now, Susan is happy to see all her neighbours around her, and is glad to learn they have all decided to stay living on the street after all.

As Madge's ghost appears, Susan says in a voiceover while she is seen walking among all the characters: "Everyone deserves a place in the history of Ramsay Street.

"Even those who watched us from afar. Together, we have been the perfect blend.”

Viewers immediately took to Twitter to share their grief that the series had come to an end.
