Is Sanditon based on a true story?
Sanditon is set during the Regency era, with the story revolving around Charlotte Heywood, a young and naive heroine as she navigates the new seaside resort of Sanditon.
Although she’s new to the coastal town of Sanditon, she soon discovers a big secret kept by its inhabitants.
The Parker family are trying to develop the resort, but Charlotte clashes with the rambunctious brother Sidney Parker.
Although the two eventually find love in each other, their paths do not remain crossed for long.
As the fortunes of his family decline, Sidney chooses to marry for money instead of love, leaving Charlotte heartbroken.
The plot is fictional and is not based on a true story.

Is Sanditon based on a book?
Sanditon is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s last ever novel.
In January 1817, Austen began working on a new novel titled The Brothers, the name of the ongoing story she later changed to Sanditon.
Tragically, Austen passed away aged 41 in July 1817 and only 11 chapters of the novel were complete.
The first transcript of the story was published by R.W. Chapman in 1925 titled Fragment Of A Novel.
This was a unique story even for Austen as it introduced her first ever black character, Georgina Lambe.
Over the years, the story has been adapted just like many of Austen’s other works.
Many creators were eager to provide a meaningful ending to the unfinished story to honour the author.
This is exactly what Andrew Davies decided to do by adapting the unfinished manuscript into a TV series.

In an official statement, James said, “Although I relished playing Sidney, for me, I’ve always maintained his journey concluded as I wanted it to.
“The broken fairy-tale-like ending between Charlotte and Sidney is different, unique and so interesting to me, and I wish the cast and crew of Sanditon every success with future series.”
