Is Maryland based on a true story?

Maryland isn't a true story, but is a fictional artistic response to real-life events.

Writer Lucy Kirkwood revealed that it was the "horrific murders" of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, that spurred her on to write the script.

Maryland grapples with the violence women are forced to reckon with in their everyday lives.

The drama focuses on two women called Mary who meet at a police station in the aftermath of their respective sexual assaults.

It was first performed in 2021, in London’s Royal Court Theatre.

Lucy explained that she originally wrote the play as a "howl" against the violence towards women.

She told the BBC: “I wrote the original play as a howl against the way we have normalised violence against women as something to be accommodated by women themselves, rather than protested by all of us.

“I hope the film will give new oxygen to that protest, but I wish it was not still such an urgent conversation.”
