Jill, who was in the studio to promote her new book Love From The Pink Palace, was moved by Russell's kind words, and so was host Carol.

Russell said: "Hello Jill, and hello Vorders.

"I'm Russell, I wrote It's A Sin and, as some of you might know, I based a lot of the show on stories Jill had told me over the years.

"We've known each other since we were 14 years old. I just wanted to say hello on the Lorraine show and say I love you, Jill, and how proud I am of you, proud for writing this book, and proud of you for everything you've done in your life, and what an honour it is to be your friend. I love you."

Beaming, Jill said: "I love him too."

A teary-eyed Carol said: "It makes me cry."

She then thanked Jill for her LGBTQ allyship on behalf of her and her friends.

It has been revealed that writer Russell has already thought out the plot for a second series, focusing on characters Jill (Lydia West) and Roscoe (Omari Douglas) in the present day.

Executive producer Nicola Shindler revealed the pair were to become campaigners.

She told a Bafta Sessions event: “There were a lot of stories about young boys being manipulated online and it was something Russell was really concerned about.

“He thought, what if you cut to the present day and Jill and Roscoe are out there to stop people from doing this.

“He just wanted to pick it up in the present day and say there are still so many people out there who need protecting. That was the point of it.”

Nicola also indicated that Russell is keen to expand the hit Channel 4 series.
