But he left fans thrilled this week as it was announced he is to make a surprise return to acting.

Nigel, now 63, will star in the new West End and touring stage production of classic musical The Commitments.

The former Corrie bad boy will appear as the character ‘Da’ throughout the ten month U.K. tour, which kicks off in September.

The much-loved musical, which made its West End debut in 2013, follows the trials and tribulations of a bunch of working class amateur musicians who form a band and bond through a love of the Motown sound.

Following his final stint on the soap, Nigel worked on a series of political and hard-hitting documentaries.

In 2007, his BBC Inside Out investigation into the Government backed Housing Market Renewal programme earned him a Royal Television Society awards nomination for best Current Affairs programme.

In recent years he's starred in a series of BBC Radio Four plays including Eastern Star and The Corrupted.

Nigel said of his new role in The Commitments: "I am thrilled to be marking my return to the stage in this production of The Commitments.

"It's an iconic story that resonates across the years, about people who though distant from the music's origins find communion and expression in the Motown style.

"A musical genre which was borne out of oppression and which the characters embrace as their own. The Motown Sound is as vibrant today as it was when it first burst through in the Sixties."

The musical, based on Roddy Doyle's award-winning novel, features an eclectic collection of popular songs such as River Deep, Mountain High, Mustang Sally, and I Heard It Through The Grapevine.
