The Netflix show recently released it's highly anticipated fourth season in two parts, and saw Jim held prisoner in a Russian gulag and forced to fight a Demogorgon.

David looked remarkably thinner in season four compared to Hopper's appearance in season three before his capture, and during an interview on BBC Breakfast today, he revealed all about his weight loss.

He said: "So yeah this past season I lost, I think it was 80 pounds.

"You know at the end of season three I was about 270 pounds and then when we came into this season I was 190."

Despite the impressive weight loss, David didn't advocate how he did it, admitting: "That was a hard process.

"It's not easy, it's a lot of not eating when you lose that much weight, and being hungry."

He added jokingly: "That's the secret, if you're curious about the diet secret, it's just not eating food."

Hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay also asked David - who is married to British singer Lily Allen - what he first thought about the show when filming the first series.

The actor admitted: "I was convinced no one was going to watch it.

"I thought it would be this weird little sci-fi show that came and went on Netflix in a week.

"I thought it was going to be a huge flop."

He couldn't have been more wrong, with Stranger Things going on to become one of the most popular shows on the streaming service all around the world.

However, the series will conclude with a fifth and final season, and David was tight-lipped about what fans can expect.

The star - who is in London appearing in the play Mad House - said of the show's writers: "I think they're pretty committed to ending it.

"We've talked from the very beginning that there's series out there that overstay their welcome, you love them and then you're on season 12 and you're like 'why is that show still on?' and I think the Duffer Brothers never wanted that to happen.

"It has a very clear ending, of which I think I know a little bit of but it's a very clear ending so next season it will end and it will be done and you will know it is done."
