I’m a game show expert – there are four key ways to get onto all the best ones

A GAME show fanatic has spilled the beans on how to appear on some of Britain’s best-loved quizzing programmes.

From Tipping Point and The Chase to Countdown and Pointless – getting on a game show isn’t as difficult as you might think.

Game show expert Di Coke, who is a regular contestant and competition winner, has revealed her top tips for landing a spot on a game show.

Applying for a show

Di explained that you need to find the right show for you and then take the leap and apply.

Most shows advertise at the end of the episode, so watch out for details of how to apply.

“Don’t be afraid to apply for brand new shows that perhaps don’t even have a confirmed title yet as well as ones you’re familiar with,” she wrote in Yours Magazine.

“The new ones get fewer applications, making it easier for you to get on.”

Meanwhile, shows like Million Pound Drop, Pointless and Eggheads require you to have a partner, so it’s good to team-up with someone first before you apply.

Di explained the application process is your chance to shine – saying applications should make themselves sound interesting and include funny stories and facts to stand out.

Plus it’s best to add a smiling photo if you’re required too.

Be yourself

If you’re lucky to get to the next stage, Di advised applicants to be themselves.

“Be chatty and enthusiastic. Sometimes you will be asked general knowledge questions, but you don’t have to get these all right. In fact, sometimes it’s better if you don’t, as getting some wrong answers often makes better television,” said Di.

Audition process

The quiz expert said applicants are often invited for an audition but expenses are not always paid.

But once you’re at the studio, it’s important to be “relaxed and genuine” and speak to other contestants.

“Once you arrive, start chatting to the fellow contestants.

“This will make you feel more relaxed and you might be able to pick up some tips from anyone who has done TV quiz shows before.”

Show time

The game show fanatic said it’s crucial to do your homework ahead of appearing on the programme.

“It’s a good idea to do some homework before you find yourself in front of the TV cameras,” suggested Di.

“Try to swot up a bit before the big day,” suggests Di.

She said it’s important to enjoy yourself even if you fluff your lines.

“Being on a game show really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you can tell stories about for years to come so just savour every moment,” she continued.
