BROKEN SPEL

Britain’s Got Talent’s Marc Spelmann breaks silence on rumours he and Stephen Mulhern are the show’s Witch and Phantom

BRITAIN'S Got Talent's Marc Spelmann has finally put to bed rumours he's behind the terrifying Witch and Phantom acts.

The magician, who made the semi-finals in 2018 and finished runner-up the following year as mysterious Magician X, has been linked to the two spooky characters ever since their auditions last month.

However, in a new exclusive interview with The Sun, Marc has set the record straight once and for all: he's not either act.

Insisting "they're 110 percent not me", he said: "I don't think the Witch is a magician. There's talk of it being Stephen Mulhern, but Stephen Mulhern is 6ft, he's quite tall, and I can't see him in that outfit.

"And the Phantom... I've no idea as to the actual identity of the Phantom at all."

He laughed: "There was someone who did a joke saying 'is Marc Spelmann one of the Teletubbies?' That would have been more my style. Let's go completely left of centre."

He was full of praise for both performers though, calling the Phantom "clever" and the Witch "eerie as anything".

Prior to the auditions, Marc and fellow 2019 finalist Ben Hart were involved in the show in a consultancy role helping producers decide which magic acts should go before the judges.

They were only loosely told about acts being considered and gave their expert opinions on whether they were exciting and fresh enough to put on stage.

Marc said: "A lot of the team BGT aren't magical experts. They have a dedicated magical talent consultant called Russ Stevens, who's brilliant, but that's one person to oversee lots of different acts.

"If they put on every act that auditioned for the show, one series of BGT would last nine months, there's just so many acts to go through.

"Once it goes into production that's when it becomes super secretive."

Judge Amanda Holden featured heavily in both the Phantom and Witch acts.

She squealed in terror as an apple packed with cockroaches and other nasties disintegrated in front of her during the Witch's audition.

Then last night she was transported into the Phantom's world, 'disappearing' into an alternate realm where she explained one of David Walliams' childhood memories to him before returning to the studio.

While she played her part perfectly, Marc is confident she had no insider knowledge of the act.

He said: "The Phantom is a voice, so all Amanda would have heard through all the parts is a voice and probably been pulled around in the dark.

"For Amanda, it could have been more confusing than being outside watching it. It's like going on a ghost train, I imagine, when you go into darkness.

"So she's not in on it that way. Of course, there's a part for her to play, but you don't know the mechanics. In a lot of ways it's not as much fun as watching it because you don't understand what happens."

Neither scary act made it through to the final, and Marc is favouring other performers to grab a wild card entry into Saturday's showpiece.

His number one pick is young singer Immi Davis, who he branded "superb" after she sang a cappella on Simon Cowell's request.

And she's closely followed by nine-year-old Ryland Petty whose Rubik's Cube illusion impressed.

There'll be no final return for Marc though. He remains a huge fan of the show but has no intentions to return for a third bite at BGT glory. Instead, he's looking forward to seeing what new acts emerge in the future.

He said: "I think the great British public have been very kind to me and I'll bow it. I've loved my time on BGT. It's a rollercoaster ride, both occasions very different experiences. One year was very personal, year two I was like the Darth Vader of BGT, I just didn't speak to anybody I had a mask on the whole time.

"It's such a great opportunity to shine and I think my time is done."
