His arrival on the channel follows the recent announcement that he would be leaving BBC Breakfast.

As well as 5 News anchor, Dan’s role will include fronting a range of brand-new non-news programming for Channel 5.

The arrival of Dan on the channel continues the evolution of the news on the broadcaster.

With up to 5.2million viewers tuning in every week, 5 News plays an important part in the UK's media landscape.

Dan will replace Dr Sian Williams as lead anchor from 2016.

Sian has presented 5 News since 2016 and announced in March that she would be stepping down from daily news presenting to take up more wide-ranging opportunities.

The presenter announced last month that he was leaving the BBC for a new role at Channel 5.

Last week, BBC Breakfast fans confessed they were in tears during Dan's final hurrah.

He admitted he had only managed to have “two hours and 46 minutes” of sleep the night before after travel issues, but still looked perky on his last show.

As BBC Breakfast wore on, Dan started to say goodbye to his colleagues.

He was then shown his best bits and messages of support from his famous friends and members of the public he has spent time with.

5 News with Dan Walker starts Monday, 6 June at 5pm on Channel 5.
