Bafta TV Awards viewers LIVID after Coronation Street’s Sally Dynevor ‘disrespected’ with brutal snub

CORONATION Street fans fumed as their favourite soap won a Bafta but was 'disrespected' when the win didn't even air on the telly.

The Sally Metcalfe star, 58, accepted the award for best Soap and Continuing Drama with costar Charlie De Melo and show bosses.

The ITV soap was up against Emmerdale and BBC medical dramas Casualty and the now axed Holby in the Soap and Continuing Drama category.

Sally used her acceptance speech to highlight the important hate crime storyline in the ITV soap ripped straight from the headlines.

Twenty-year-old Sophie Lancaster, a self-described "goth", was murdered in August 2007 after she and boyfriend Robert Maltby were beaten and left for dead by a gang of drunken yobs

Her story was told through Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) and Seb Franklin (Harry Visinoni) who were attacked, with the latter dying of his injuries.

"We weren’t expecting this tonight, we really weren’t, so thank you so much Bafta for this award," Sally started.

"Working on this show is just a privilege – and the drama and the comedy go so well on Corrie.

"And one of the most important stories we have told this year was the hate crime story. So we would like to dedicate this to Sophie Lancaster and her mother Sylvia Lancaster."

Despite Sally's moving speech, Corrie fans were livid that the moving moment did not air in the main broadcast on live TV.

Instead it was categorised under 'other awards' and her speech subsequently published to social media.

"So @BAFTA not only disrespected the achievements of #CoronationStreet and soaps in general, and all soap fans, but they also dismissed the memories of Sophie Lancaster and her mother Sylvia, who campaigned for recognition and justice for her murdered daughter. Shameful. #baftas," complained one fan on Twitter.

A second added: "Very much deserved. It's such a shame that this award was under 'other awards' and wasn't shown in the main part of the show. Well done."

And a third commented: "Corrie's Sophie Lancaster inspired storyline was incredible and the win needed air time, not just a quick edit."

Nearly 15 years after the horrific attack, Sophie's mother, Sylvia Lancaster OBE, was brought in by Coronation Street producers to help with a shocking twist that mirrored the tragic case of her daughter's death, after she was placed in a coma following her injuries.

On August 24, 2007, 13 days after the attack, the decision was taken to turn her life support off.

Police arrested five teens in the days following the brutal attack. They were initially charged with grievous bodily harm until Sophie's death.

On March 27, 2008, Herbert and Harris were found guilty of murder, and the judge allowed the youths to be publicly named for the first time.

Both were sentenced on April 28, 2008, to life in prison with a minimum of 16 years three months for Herbert, later reduced on appeal to 15 years six months, and 18 years for Harris.

Sylvia formed the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to create respect for subcultures and hopes this episode will urge victims of hate crime to come forward.
