Michael was a guest on today’s GMB and was treated to a surprise meeting with the Great Ormond Street nurse, who had held his hand while he was in intensive care.

Overwhelmed Kate got up and hugged Beth partway through the chat to show her appreciation for the nurse’s efforts.

Kate said: “You cared for Michael and Derek I think, I found out was two beds away. Did you care for him?”

When she replied that she did, Kate told her: “Thank you so much by the way. Thank you so much.”

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt author Michael, 74, spent seven weeks in a coma after falling ill in March 2020.

Derek spent over a year in hospital and came close to dying multiple times.

He is now receiving round the clock care at home.

Kate recently revealed he finds it hard to communicate, saying: “In a sense Derek – because of Covid – has a version of this where he can understand, sometimes do odd words, but can’t express himself.

“It’s very interesting what you say Anita about the loneliness of that because you’ve lost that relationship and that ability for others to see your partner.”
