Actors Sophie Aldred and Janet Fielding will be returning to the show for Jodie's swansong in what was a massive surprise for viewers.

Janet plays Tegan Jovanka, an Aussie air stewardess who was the companion to Tom Baker and Peter Davison's Doctors on the BBC One show between 1981 and 1984.

The return will mark the first time she has been on the show in almost forty years.

Sophie plays Ace, the sidekick to Sylvester McCoy's seventh Doctor from 1987 to 1989, so it will be more than three decades since she has been seen.

Fans went wild on twitter.

One wrote: "I'm not gonna lie, I'm very excited to see these two wonderful characters return to the show."

A second added: "I love Classic Who, so meeting Tegan and Ace again will be a wonderful gift. I'm really excited to find out what has happened to them since the last time they saw their respective Doctors, and what their dynamic with the Thirteenth will be like."

Janet said of returning: “In some ways it was a very different experience to what it was like when I finished recording in 1983, but in many ways it was very similar. It was so lovely to be a working member of the Doctor Who family again.”

And Sophie said of coming back:  “It’s been quite a challenge to have such a big secret to keep, even from my family, and I couldn’t be more thrilled and excited to have been asked back. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I adored being part of the TARDIS team again.”

Jodie's eagerly anticipated final episode will coincide with the BBC's centenary celebrations.

Whittaker, the first woman to play the Doctor, has appeared in three series of the sci-fi drama. Her first series in 2018 was one of its most-watched ever.

She announced that she was quitting the role last summer, and that she would be saying goodbye to the character in three specials.

Her replacement as the Doctor is expected to be revealed soon.

The upcoming special will also feature villains the Master, Daleks and Cybermen in the same episode for the first time.

Exiting showrunner Chris Chibnall teased: “Jodie’s final feature-length story contains a plethora of treats and surprises for audiences and fans, not least the return of two of the most beloved companions in the show’s history.

"They’ll be helping the Doctor fight on three fronts, against her deadliest enemies: the Master, Daleks and Cybermen,  in one huge story!
