SATURDAY Night Takeaway's Stephen Mulhern made an eye-catching return to our screens - in a pair of impossibly small shorts.

The 45-year-old star relaunched his spin-off show In For A Penny in Birmingham - where lawn tennis is thought to have been invented.

It was on that pretext that Stephen then stroke onto the screen in small white bulging shorts holding a tennis racquet.

One shocked viewer tweeted: "Stephen Mulherns tennis shorts!!!! New balls please."

Another wrote: "Hahaha, did ya see Stephen's, '🍆' in those tennis shorts?!?"

A third said: "You know when you look at the sun and can still see it for ages afterwards? Even with your eyes closed? I’ve still got that with the image of @StephenMulhern in those tennis shorts."

More on Stephen Mulhern

He opened the show by telling viewers: "Welcome to In For A Penny. This week I'm here in Birmingham where tennis was invented.

"Trust me, just look it up. I'm going to destroy the Over 75 Edgbaston champion."

The bloke replied: "Over 60" but Stephen told him: "Doesn't matter mate."

It's far from the first time Stephen's choice of sportswear has got him attention, after he appeared on Saturday Night Takeaway in a vest and shorts painted entirely in gold.

The outfit was so tight hosts Ant and Dec dubbed him "golden balls" and joked that he'd overdone the fake tan.

One fan tweeted at the time: "Those shorts are leaving nothing to the imagination. I'm seeing Stephen Mulhern in a whole different light."

Another joked that Stephen "must have stuffed something down there" - saying he "didn't wear his socks on his feet tonight".

In For A Penny started off as a feature on Saturday Night Takeaway but proved such a massive hit it got its own series.

Stephen was out of action for much of the run of Ant and Dec's current series because of illness.

However, he was back for the final two shows of the run to host the long-running feature Ant Versus Dec.
