The Antiques Roadshow guest explained the brooch had been handed down from her grandmother to her mother and now to her.

She added that her grandmother had served in the German air force in World War II and had been stationed in Norway where she fell pregnant.

However, her grandmother never revealed the identity of her grandfather, saying: "She never wanted to talk about the war and she never mentioned to my mum who her dad was."

The guest believed her grandmother's heart had been "broken" by whoever gave her the piece, and Susan explained how it was it was Solje brooch.

The word means sunny or shiny in traditional Norwegian and Susan added: "It's a lovely example of their traditional jewellery that went with their traditional costume so it's a very important symbol in that respect.

"The traditional way that it has been constructed goes back to that lovely Viking jewellery of ancient world and it just really has this fun aspect to it as well."

However, things took an emotional turn for the guest when revealed the main reason women wore the brooches was as part of their wedding jewellery.

Susan said: "The discs that are around it are known as spoons and the tradition of these brooches were that they were given to sometimes young girls, babies for protection against evil spirits."

The guest started to cry and quickly wiped tears from her eyes as she said: "I wonder who broke whose heart because my grandma could have said no."

Susan revealed the brooch was worth around £100 but it held much more emotional value.

She said: "For a very straightforward piece of jewellery, there is so much history behind it and so much emotion as well."
