The best new TV to stream this week – from Single Drunk Female to Serving The Hamptons
FANCY a documentary? A drama? a comedy? All three?
Whatever you’re in the mood for this week, The Sun’s TV Mag is here to point you in the right direction.
What’s New?
Serving The Hamptons – Discovery+
Take a shot of Vanderpump Rules, mix with a splash of Below Deck and stir in a healthy dose of Summer House and you’ve got this mouth-watering new five-part reality series all about 75 Main, a popular and exclusive restaurant in the Hamptons.
Tracking the trials and tribulations of the restaurant’s uniformly young and good-looking staff – including hostess Samantha Crichton – who live together in a smart beach house, it promises a hearty helping of romance, drama, arguments and annoying diners.
Available Thursday
Single Drunk Female – Disney+
When twentysomething Samantha Fink’s (Sofia Black-D’Elia) problems with alcohol put the skids under her trendy New York media career, she’s forced to return home to her mum in Boston and face up to her addiction.
But, finding herself surrounded by many of the triggers that made her drink in the first place and a host of ghosts from her past, it proves even more painful than she expected. A smart, funny and warm-hearted new series.
Available Wednesday
The Straits – Acorn TV
If you’re missing watching Brian Cox play the tough head of a dysfunctional family who’s worried about which of his clan might succeed him, check out The Straits, in which Brian plays – yes – the tough head of a dysfunctional family who’s worried about which of his clan might succeed him.
This darkly funny Australian crime drama from 2012 stars Brian as Harry Montebello, whose family have a successful drugs and guns smuggling business, despite bitter power struggles. But when they come under attack from some brutal gangs, the Montebellos must pull together to survive.
Available Monday
Harry Wild – Acorn TV
A cantankerous, brash and rude retired literature professor living in Dublin, Harriet ‘Harry’ Wild (played by the legendary Jane Seymour) finds herself sucked into the world of crime-solving when she sees similarities between a murder that her police detective son Charlie is investigating and the plot of an obscure Elizabethan play.
She can’t help attempting some amateur sleuthing and, before long, realises she has a talent for it. Cue seven further episodes of cleverly constructed whodunnit fun with Jane having a ball as Harry, who’s all waspish put downs with a wicked twinkle in her eye.
Available from Monday
Top 5
Sanditon – BritBox
While it might not boast the same headline-grabbing sauciness as Bridgerton, Sanditon remains top-drawer costume drama fun. Happily, the second series is as lavish as the first, with Charlotte (Rose Williams) still being swept along by a tumultuous tide of early 19th-century romance and intrigue.
Is It Cake? – Netflix
It’s a straightforward concept: bakers attempt to create cakes that look like exactly everyday objects – think trainers and sandwiches – and then a panel of judges guess which is the object and which is the cake. Like the cakes produced, the result is delicious and seriously moreish TV.
My Brilliant Friend – NOW & Sky On Demand
The third season of this gorgeous, sweeping Italian drama has landed, reuniting overjoyed fans with Lenù (Margherita Mazzucco) and Lila (Gaia Girace). It’s now the 1970s and the two friends’ lives are pulling them even further apart, the realities of adulthood starting to bite. Stunning and moving.
The Last Kingdom – Netflix
Who can resist a show crammed with sword-wielding, heavily bearded men and fearless, butt-kicking women? Yes, the fifth season of the all-action, Saxons-versus-Vikings saga is typically dramatic and brutal, with Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) tasked with training the king’s son to be a warrior.
Slow Horses – Apple TV+
He’s rarely looked unhealthier – pallid, unshaven and with a mop of greasy hair – but Gary Oldman is superb as seedy, chain-smoking spy Jackson Lamb in this enjoyably tense, six-part, cat-and-mouse espionage thriller. A strong cast also includes Kristen Scott Thomas and Olivia Cooke.
TV Mag is available every Saturday, free in The Sun.
