The often harrowing show is an adaptation from the author and junior doctor Adam Kay's hit non-fiction book, This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor.

In the latest instalment, it showed actor Ben and another colleague sharing a personal trauma.

The armchair critics were left dabbing tears away as they discussed the tragedy, with couple Pete and Sophie rounding off the emotional comments after the scene aired out.

Sophie said: "You should always just show people that you do actually are," before her husband interjected: "You never know what someone's going through on the inside.

"You never know what someone is battling with."

Fans were candid in their feelings when taking to social media, with one confessing: "I cried at #Gogglebox! When they we’re talking about the young doc in #thisisgoingtohurt. Have seen the same thing in RL - #nhs staff are human too."

Another wrote: "Quite the ending to #gogglebox there - you do never know what anyone could be going through, so just be kind…" before a third added: "This is going to hurt hit just as hard second time round 😭 a mess #Gogglebox."

One then wrote: "Everyone who experiences secondary trauma because of the job that they do, works just as hard trying to regain a sense of equilibrium outside of work as they do trying to care for others in work.
It’s exhausting. #SecondaryTrauma #Gogglebox."

Another surmised: "Gogglebox watching #thisisgoingtohurt and I’m in bits again😢"

TRUE STORY

This is Going to Hurt is based on Adam Kay's diaries from when he worked as a junior doctor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, so it is based on a true story.

The entries were written by Adam during his medical training from 2004 to 2010.

The book discusses political issues in the health care system of the NHS and societal conflicts between the general population and neglected doctors.

Meanwhile the BBC programme shows the ins and outs of a doctors life at hospital with sleepless nights and missed weekends.

It depicts Adam finding his way through hospital hierarchy, as he is junior enough to work the crippling hours but senior enough to deal with the incredible responsibilities which are often life and death.

This is Going to Hurt also shows how Adam tries to hang on to his personal life while juggling 97-hour weeks.
