Who was Peter Bowles and what was his cause of death?

PETER Bowles has died at the age of 85.

The English stage and screen star was most famous for his role in BBC sitcom To The Manor Born.

Who was Peter Bowles?

Born in London in 1936, Peter Bowles began his career starring in Shakespeare plays with the Old Vic Company in 1956.

The company then went on to perform a sell-out season at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway.

His first recurring role on TV was playing Benny Edelman in Magnolia Street in 1961, before joining the cast of popular drama Emergency-Ward 10, as Philip Royston in 1966.

Over the years he starred in numerous sitcoms including Rising Damp, Only When I laugh and The Bounder.

But he was best known for playing Richard DeVere in To The Manor Born alongside Penelope Keith from 1979 until 1981, with a special being aired in 2007.

Other TV credits include Lytton's Diary, which Bowles devised himself, Rumpole Of The Bailey and Victoria, where he played the Duke of Wellington.

Film credits include 1966 movie Blow-Up and The Bank Job (2008).

The actor won ITV personality of the year in 1983.

Bowles famously turned down the role of Jerry Leadbetter in The Good Life - which eventually went to Paul Eddington.

What was Peter Bowles' cause of death?

Bowles' agent Gavin Barker confirmed that his client had passed away after a battle with cancer, in a statement released on March 17, 2022.

Barker said: "The actor Peter Bowles has sadly passed away at the age of 85 from cancer.

"Starting his career at the Old Vic Theatre in 1956, he starred in 45 theatrical productions ending at the age of 81 in The Exorcist at the Phoenix Theatre.

"He worked consistently on stage and screen, becoming a household name on TV as the archetypal English gent in To The Manor Born, Only When I Laugh, The Bounder and Lytton's Diary, which he devised himself.

"He leaves his wife of over 60 years, Sue, and their three children Guy, Adam and Sasha."

Bwoles married Susan Bennett in 1961.

The couple had been married for over 60 years when it was announced that Bowles had passed away after a battle with cancer.
