RAMSAY'S BEST

Seven best moments from Neighbours

NEIGHBOURS will be ending production in June, 2022, and fans of the Australian soap are beside themselves.

Premiering on screens in 1985, the show has been a healthy source of TV drama, from iconic weddings to amnesic characters and evil doppelgangers.

1. Charlene and Scott's wedding (1987)

Played by worldwide popstar Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, Charlene and Scott became on of the show's power couples.

Charlene made her debut in Erinsborough in 1986 and met Scott not long after.

They tied the knot on screens a year after first meeting and their nuptials were watched by more than two million Australian viewers.

The ceremony was shown in 1988 in the UK and attracted 20 million more viewers, thus becoming one of the most-watched TV moments of the decade.

Mid-1988, Kylie decided it was time for her to focus more on her music career and left the programme.

Her final scenes were aired in July that same year, as mechanic Charlene left for Brisbane.

Scott eventually followed her and both characters left Ramsay Street behind, never to return - for now?

2. Harold Bishop's return (1996)

Due to contract negotiations, actor Ian Smith was pushed out of the line-up after appearing in Neighbours for almost ten years.

Poor Harold left his wife Madge and disappeared while out at sea.

As his body was never found, the worst was automatically presumed, as was the case with his political namesake, former Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt.

But on-screen Harold was never really dead, as viewers and his family found out in 1996 when Harold came back.

Five years after his disappearance, Harold believed he was a man named Ted after suffering amnesia and being picked up by a random boat.

He eventually gained his memory back with Madge's help.

Speaking of which...

3. Madge dies and her ghost comes for Harold (2001)

Despite the sad nature of the event, Neighbours fans were pleased to see the couple together before Madge's dying breath.

The columnist and former secretary - portrayed by Anne Charleston - was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and contracted septicaemia soon after.

She died in her bed with Harold by her side in heart-breaking scenes, but this wasn't the end.

Madge's ghost would come back to help Harold navigate through tough times.

Harold eventually left Erinsborough to move to Port Douglas and has returned to Ramsay Street on multiple occasions.

His return for the final episodes of Neighbours has already been confirmed.

4. Susan loses her memory (2002)

Amnesia has made several victims in Erinsborough and Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne) was one of them.

The Erinsborough High teacher slipped on an upturned cereal bowl and sustained head injury from the fall, which led to her losing 30 years of memories.

This, of course, included her life with on-off husband Karl (Alan Fletcher) and she believed she was 16 again - despite her being 45.

Before she could recover her memory, Susan had to attend a 70's-themed party and give viewers some of the most confusing (albeit, hilarious) scenes of Neighbours history.

5. Dave and Aaron's wedding (2018)

Although many weddings after Charlene and Scott's ceremony ended in tragedy, Dave and Aaron's nuptials gave everyone a reason to be happy.

The nuptials were aired on Australian TV just after same-sex marriage was legalised in Australia and became the first same-sex wedding to ever air on Aussie screens.

David Tanaka (Takaya Honda) and Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) tied the knot as Kylie and Jason's duet Especially for You played, in a tender nod to the on-screen couple.

6. Dee's doppelganger (2017)

Speaking of weddings, Jarrod "Toadfish" Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney) was convinced he found the love of his life in 2003, and married Dee Bliss.

A happy ending? Obviously not as Toadie drove his car over a cliff while kissing his new bride and the latter presumably died.

But in true Neighbours fashion, Dee (Madeleine West) reappeared in Erinsborough in 2017, telling Toadie she was pregnant when she went missing and gave birth to their daughter named Willow.

End of story? Again, not at all since it later transpired that the woman was actually a Dee lookalike called Andrea Somers (also played by Madeleine West).

Two years later, the real Dee came back from the dead and it was revealed that Dee and Andrea were actually twins separated at birth.

7. Bouncer has a barking mad dream (1990)

Amid all the drama, another character brought some much-deserved light-heartedness.

Labrador retriever Bouncer was first given to Lucy Robinson and made his first appearance in Ramsay Street in 1987.

The pup bounced from owner to owner and ended up in the care of Mrs Mangel (Vivean Gray).

In a dream dubbed on of Neighbours' most memorable moments, Bouncer dreamed he was getting married to Rosie, the Border Collie living next door.

Bouncer eventually left Erinsborough to move to the countryside and even became a father.
