Millions of people on standard variable tariffs are set to see their bills rise by hundreds of pounds from April 1.

That's because the price cap that controls gas and electricity will go up by nearly £700 for the average dual fuel account.

Martin was today attempting to advise This Morning viewers whether to bag fixed deals or stay on variable tariffs.

He said: "I've never had anything like this before. Energy used to be giving people a standard answer on what's cheaper."

Putting his hands on his head Martin, 49, added: "Now I'm having to do risk analysis. It's horrendous."

As part of a typically passionate speech on the show today he admitted: "Nobody knows what is going to happen. No one knows what's going on in the world."

He outlined his rules for whether to stay or switch on the show and in his hugely popular .

The cash-saving guru explained: "I would not switch to a fixed deal unless it was less than 75 per cent more than the current price cap, or if you want to base it on the April price cap, no more than 15 per cent more than the April price cap.

"The current price cap is £1,277 and will be £1,925 from April 1. Wholesale gas prices are rocketing and could push that higher in October when the cap is reviewed again."

Martin insisted customers are unlikely to find deals with prices like this on comparison sites.

He said: "There are no open market options close to that price – they're all 40% more than the April price cap at the very cheapest."

Instead you should keep an eye out for offers from your supplier as some are doing offers for existing customers.

Martin, who appears on This Morning every week, has been reduced to tears after being unable to directly help those struggling in the past.
