MASKED Singer star Charlotte Church has told how she had to "cut the ties" with her mum in an heartrending interview with Kate Garraway.
The 35-year-old will bare all about her emotional decision as a teen on ITV's Life Stories tonight.
The singer and presenter reveals she left home aged just 16 because the star felt like she was being 'stifled.'
In an emotional interview with Kate she says: "As far as I was concerned, I needed to be free.
"I had to be a specific way for a long time and all of the normal ways in which we grow…were stifled and such."
She also adds: "I just had to cut the ties. I was at an age where I thought I knew everything. I knew better and I knew what I was doing. They were just trying to protect me but I just saw that as holding me too tight.
"It’s only with hindsight that I knew just what it meant to my mum. It felt like they had completely lost me and just this whole life that we had built together for the last few years.
Charlotte shares how she came to terms with the impact of her decision to leave her family behind and enjoy her teenage years of freedom.
She said: "I totally understand now what they went through…For me, I was 16 and the world was my oyster and I was having a load of fun. I don’t feel guilty as I don’t believe in guilt as a worthwhile emotion.
"I feel sorry, particularly for my mum as I know what it cost her."
Her mum Maria, who was sat in the audience, added: “I felt lost, I felt isolated. I totally shut down. I just sat on the floor and cried.
"I had a nervous break and for months and months and months I just couldn’t get out of bed. I went into a cocoon, a little shell, I was devastated.”
The mother and daughter have since repaired their relationship with Charlotte sharing on Instagram that Maria is the proud owner of a new dog grooming and dog hotel business.
The 35-year-old singer was set to be the very first guest on Kate Garraway's Life Stories.
According to an ITV spokesperson, an ongoing production delay meant Nadiya Hussain's interview was featured in place of Charlotte's.
Kate took over the intimate show after Piers Morgan stepped down after twelve years of hosting emotional and riveting celebrity interviews.
Prior to Charlotte's identity being revealed on The Masked Singer, Kate accidentally gave fans a hint that it may be her.
As she and Ben Shephard crossed over to Lorraine Kelly on Good Morning Britain, Lorraine said: "There might be somebody you recognise from Masked Singer on as well."
"I know … I’m excited!" Kate shrieked in excitement before Ben added: "You know."
Kate immediately attempted to backtrack by saying: "Yeah, uh, I don’t know. I think I might know but I’m not meant. Oh my god, I don’t know what I’m meant to know or not no! Lorraine! I’m so confused!"
"Don’t save her Lorraine, there’s no saving her!" Ben Shephard laughed.
Fans immediately suspected Kate knew Charlotte was behind the Mushroom costume, after interviewing her for Life Stories.
Charlotte's episode is set to air tonight at 9pm on ITV.
