FEEL LUCKY, PUNK?

Antiques Roadshow fans all have the same complaint as 70s ‘punk clobber’ gets eye-watering valuation

LAST night's instalment of Antiques Roadshow introduced a guest with items of clothing from the seventies - but viewers had a complaint.

While the clothes allowed the guest to have a jaw-dropping valuation, viewers of the BBC One show were left puzzled by the valuation.

Airing weekly on Sundays, BBC's Antiques Roadshow is a goldmine for any antiques enthusiast.

During last night's episode of the programme, one guest brought in what he claimed was his "young punk' clothing.

Expert Lisa Lloyd valued two shirts, one being a Vive Le Rock T-Shirt from fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, while the guest saw another one of his shirts - a military-inspired garment from 1979 - being valued for £3,000.

The shirt was valued at this exact amount even after alterations - which amazed the guest.

"The fact that you've got them and you've had them from new, since 1979, that gives it the cast-iron provenance which is what you really need when selling these", Lisa told the guest.

She then added: "I think the thing is with these is, punks would have worn them endlessly."

"Given the fact it's had a little bit of alteration on it, I would think at auction you're probably looking at somewhere in the region of two to three thousand on that one."

The guest was taken aback while Lisa said it was "a shame" he stopped wearing the clothing.

But while he was amazed, Antiques Roadshow viewers were more baffled as the clothes were not old enough to be considered antique.

Generally, an item should be at least 100 years to be defined as such.

Prior to the 100-year mark, it can only be classed as vintage.

One viewer commented on Twitter: "Punk clobber. Not antique is it? I don't mind though as I like a bit of punk."

A second followed suit: "Sooooooo stuff from 1977 is an 'antique'?"

"Can't be. It was only a couple of years back. Recent history", a third chimed in.

A fourth penned, fuming: "Punk rock clothes on Antiques Road Show, kill me now."

"Good grief, clobber from the 70s on Antiques Road Show", wrote a fifth viewer, adding: "I’ll have to dig out an old pack of Vesta Chow Mein and my Plasticraft kit and take it along next time."

Antiques Roadshow airs on Sundays at 7pm on BBC One.
