Jimmy Carr hit with fresh backlash for Holocaust comments as Channel 4 doc 60 Days With The Gypsies kicks off

CHANNEL 4 documentary 60 Days with the Gypsies has prompted viewers to turn on comedian Jimmy Carr over his recent Holocaust remarks.

A decade ago, Big Fat Gypsy Weddings became one of the biggest ratings hits in Channel 4 history, pulling in nine-million viewers and courting claims that it misrepresented travellers.

Now the channel has returned to the topic for 60 Days with the Gypsies - but the controversy still remains.

The new documentary sees explorer Ed Stafford immerse himself into the Romany Gypsy and Irish Travelling culture for two months.

Tweeting about the two-part programme ahead of broadcast, Ed said: "There have been a handful of gypsy shows.

“But none that have tried to get underneath the skin of the real issues for Romany Gypsies and Irish Travellers - it’s not as simple as it seems."

Several people who tuned in to watch the first episode took the opportunity to make jibes at comedian and TV host Jimmy Carr.

It comes after he sparked angry criticism over a clip from his recent one-hour Netflix special, His Dark Material.

During the broadcast, which aired on Christmas Day, he spoke of "six million Jewish lives being lost" during the horror.

For his punchline, he made an awful remark about the mass murder of travellers during the Holocaust.

The vile comments about the mass murder of Romani and Sinti people during World War Two have been slammed by celebrities, charities, and Downing Street.

Reacting to Stafford's new documentary, one viewer said on Twitter: "Jimmy Carr should spend 60 days with the Gypsies, see how that would turn out."

Echoing their comments, someone else said: "Is this another exploitative reality TV program or Jimmy Carr's punishment for telling a joke? Community Disservice as it's more commonly known."

While a third added: "Jimmy Carr won't be missing 60 Days with the Gypsies on Channel 4."

60 Days with the Gypsies returns to Channel 4 at 9pm next Monday.
