Will there be a season 2 of The Responder?
THE emotional five-part cop drama glued viewers to the screen, as former police officer Tony Schumacher brings his experience of the night beat to the small screen.
Fans are eager to know if season 2 of The Responder is in the works - here's everything we know so far.
Will there be a second series of The Responder?
The first season of The Responder has come to an end, with the fifth and last episode of the police drama airing on February 2, 2022 on BBC One.
It has proven a massive success among TV lovers, and everyone is asking the same question - will the show return for a second series?
The showrunners have left the door open for another season, with troubled cop Chris Carson (Martin Freeman), and his rookie work partner Rachel (Adelayo Adedayo) driving off to begin yet another night shift.
Although so far there has been no official confirmation, screenwriter Tony Schumacher has expressed he's excited to see where the story can go.
"I set out to write Fawlty Towers – just get out while the going’s good and just go.
"And yet we ended up with a story that naturally has stayed alive and we can take it to other places.
"And personally, I’m just excited to even think about exploring that... So if it happens, it might not, but if it did, it would be exciting just to see where we can take it."
The Responder is based on the real experiences of Tony Schumacher as a bobby on the beat, and tells the story of morally-compromised cop Chris trying to navigate the intense pressure of working nights in Liverpool city centre.
This is Schumacher's first original series for TV and aims to explore the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing.
Speaking about what it was like to be a police responder, Tony told the BBC: “Every time you opened the car door, you didn’t know what you were going to find.
"It’s brilliantly exciting at the start but after a bit it becomes a bit monotonous and then it becomes a bit too much.”
What happened in the first season of The Responder?
Season One of The Responder offers an action-packed watch, with main character Chris Carson facing the twists and turns of life on night duty.
Martin Freeman steps into the role of the troubled cop, whose mental health is creaking under the intense pressure of working nights in Liverpool city centre.
He tries to keep his head above water while navigating his personal and professional life, and decides to partner with a new, inexperienced and still idealistic officer Rachel Hargreaves.
As he attempts to get local addict Casey (Emily Fairn) out out of trouble with a dangerous drug gang, Chris lands himself in hot water.
Meanwhile, work rival Ray Mullen (Warren Brown) is secretly plotting a corruption case against him.
What has the cast said about a second series?
Actor Warren Brown has teased about a second series of The Responder, saying there are "murmurs" but nothing has been confirmed yet.
He said: "So often you don't know how well something's going to be received, so you don't know from the off that they're wanting to do more of a series.
"But I think more and more now, when an audience reaction has been great for a show, there's definite scope to do more.
"But again, you know, fantastic people to be back up north filming, working with great actors, working on a great job. Yeah, I'd love to go back if that happens."
Martin Freeman is also eager to return for another season, saying he'd "love to do it again".
"Chris is a character I'd like to return to because I'm a sucker for good scripts.
"I'll walk anywhere for a good script and we had a great team on this.
"I love the team, it's beautifully produced, and so yeah, I would hope to do it again!"
