HAIR TO THE THRONE

Antiques Roadshow’s Fiona Bruce left stunned by locket with secret royal connection inside

ANTIQUES Roadshow host Fiona Bruce was left open-mouthed by a locket that had a connection to a king hidden inside.

Fiona and her team of experts took a trip to Farnborough, Hants., in a classic episode of Antiques Roadshow - and her jaw soon dropped to the floor.

The presenter examined a beautiful silver locket and soon found inside the team that it had a special royal connection.

The 57-year-old explained that the locket contained a tiny strand of hair believed to have belonged to a former monarch.

She began: “Amongst all the ceramics, silverware and jewellery that we see on the roadshow, we often see a lot of hair.

“We’ve had Nelson’s hair, Wellington’s hair and we have here what purports to be hair from Charles I.”

Fiona went on to explain it was an unusual find as it wasn’t a full strand of hair inside the locket, but a minuscule cutting.

However, the presenter explained that, unfortunately, there was no way to confirm the origins of the hair.

She added: “It’s impossible to verify whether it is in fact Charles I’s or not.

“But, I can only assume that if it is his, it was taken from his head before he met his grizzly end."

After his defeat in the English Civil War, Charles was famously tried, found guilty, and beheaded in January 1649.

Antiques Roadshow is available on BBC iPlayer now.
