Despite being a main character in the programme, fans don't know much about Selwyn's personal life, so many were shocked when his niece Ruby Patterson joined the team as an officer three years ago.

Viewers will be happy to know that the remaining episodes of the eleventh series - which premiered earlier this month - will delve deeper into what makes Don's alter-ego tick.

"I have a suspicion that we will find out a little bit more about Selwyn," Don recently told the .

"It's all I can say at the moment, I'm under embargo.

"There's a man over there with a gun and if I say anymore, that's me finished.

"I think we will learn a bit more about Selwyn and the more you learn about a character, the more enigmatic they become."

It comes after fans called out an outrageous blunder in the latest episode.

Friday's episode saw DCI Neville Parker and his team investigate the mysterious death of a skydiver.

The man, Zach Ogilvy, appeared to have been stabbed while in mid-air, leaving the police baffled.

The cops questioned Zach's associates, including Alessa Park - played by Call The Midwife's Jessica Clark.

Afterwards, she made a suspicious-sounding phone call while standing alone on the beach, but Death in Paradise viewers were distracted by the fact she appeared to be holding her phone upside down.

As she ended the call, she moved the handset away from her face, revealing the charge points at the top when they should have been at the bottom.

Then as she held the phone to her chest, the camera could just be seen peeping out near the bottom right, when it would normally be in the top left.

One eagle-eyed viewer wrote: "Why is she using her phone upside down? #DeathInParadise."

Another added: "WHY IS SHE HOLDING HER PHONE UPSIDE DOWN?!? #DeathInParadise. The guy did it in #HopeStreet last week too!"
