EastEnders fans in US left fuming after show is AXED stateside despite viewers being 13 years behind UK

EASTENDERS fans in the US have been left hanging after the BBC pulled 13 years’ worth of episodes.

Albert Square lovers in the States are watching shows from 2009 — a time lag built up because they are screened only once a week rather than four times a week in the UK.

The Beeb says it is “no longer able” to provide the later episodes of the 36-year-old soap which is shown on public broadcaster PBS.

It means US fans will miss seeing Phil Mitchell turn into a crack addict, The Queen Vic burn down or Danny Dyer join as Mick Carter.

At the moment, they are waiting to see if the late Barbara Windsor’s Peggy Mitchell will win the Walford council election campaign.

Michael Gordon, 69, who is leading a fight to keep Enders on air in the US, said: “There are lots of people from all walks of life who love it and it isn’t fair to simply stop it like this. I don’t want to miss 13 years of my favourite programme.”

Fellow fan Judith Hallett, 77, a Professor of Classics at the University of Maryland, said: “It’s like losing contact with a dear friend or family member”.

Current episodes are available on BritBox in the US.
