KATE'S TEARS

Kate Garraway ‘hasn’t really cried’ since husband Derek fell ill 18 months ago as she’s ‘scared floodgates will open’

GOOD Morning Britain's Kate Garraway has admitted she "hasn't really cried" since her husband Derek Draper fell ill last year.

The TV presenter confessed she's too scared to "open the floodgates" and shed tears over Derek's 18-month-long battle with Covid-19.

Telly hostess Kate, 54, said she hasn't "really cried" since the former lobbyist was taken into hospital with the coronavirus last March.

Derek, 54, spent over a year in intensive care as he fought to survive, now needing round-the-clock care and therapy to help rebuild his speech and mobility.

While he returned to the family home to be with his wife and children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12, he still sleeps more than 20 hours of the day.

Kate admitted she was worried that "opening the floodgates" would see her get herself in a state following the nightmare year.

"I mean I still haven't really cried. So I don't feel in the right place to see a therapist yet," Kate opened up to Stella magazine.

She went on to praise her two children for being "so amazing" and brave during Derek's battle with the brutal side-effects brought on by the virus.

"They’re both processing it all in different ways and they do talk about it with friends," Kate said, adding they were just "overjoyed" to have Derek home.

She also tearfully opened up about missing the "little things" about their day-to-day life at home, including Derek singing in the morning.

Kate said she would "give everything" to hear her other half "being really loud, shouty and full of opinions" and "ruffling feathers in the way he used to".

She concluded by telling Covid sceptics to spend "an hour in her house" and witness how the disease ravaged her husband to change their mind about the jab.

It comes shortly after Kate hinted that she may make another documentary about husband Derek's Covid battle following their National Television Awards win.

Speaking at the NTAs, the emotional Good Morning Britain presenter revealed she hopes to make a follow-up film.

She explained: "There are more stories to tell" adding: "There is a lot of challenges that we’re facing now.

"I am now experiencing being a carer, and the challenges that are there.”

Finding Derek broadcast on ITV saw Kate win the Authored Documentary category at the NTAs.

The film chronicled his year long hospitalisation after being struck down by the virus.

In her acceptance speech, Kate revealed Derek should be the one at the helm of a documentary about his Covid journey and promised he would get the chance.

Kate started by saying: "Thank you so much. It was hugely brave decision of ITV to commission this they didn’t know what they were making, they didn’t know they were making a story about bereavement or about a triumph.

"Lucy [Wilcox, the film's director] arrived at our home not knowing if she was seeing a family in grief or relief. In the end really it ended up being something between the two."

Fighting back tears, she continued: "Thank you so much for voting. I wonder if the reason you did because our story is your story.

"We have all been touched by the pandemic. Whether it’s livelihood, mental health, all the other extraordinary documentaries which have been highlighted and nominated tonight, they have also been affected by the pandemic.

"And I want to say to all the other Darceys and Billys and Dereks – whatever you’re going through and however you are affected, you are not forgotten."
