A PLACE in the Sun's Ben Hillman was stunned when a potential buyer brought a house tour to an abrupt halt - describing the viewing as 'pointless'.

The property expert was in the process of finding a retirement home for Gilly and her husband Andy on the Silver Coast of Portugal.

The pair have been holidaying in the area for 25 years, but now wanted to make their visits a bit more permanent.

With Andy unable to travel, Gilly was joined by their daughter Kat on the Channel 4 show to check out Ben's finds matching their budget of around £210,000.

Her long list of requirements included a pool, four bedrooms, a big kitchen, space for their dogs, plus a craft room and garage for her husband.

But things were not going well as two houses in, none of the properties had managed to foster any interest from Gilly.

And despite the third house offering four bedrooms and as a swimming pool, Ben could see things were still not going his way.

Commenting on how close the nieghbouring properties were and the size of some of the rooms, Gilly said: "It’s certainly not what Andy’s after."

Ben asked: "Is this you or Andy talking then?"

To which Gilly replied: "Well, it’s a bit of both, really - we’re on the same level on this."

Ben responded: "Okay, well, there’s not much working for you here," prompting an apology from the sun seeker.

He quipped: "No, it’s fine, I’m trying my best here, Gilly."

Laughing she said: "I know you are, and I feel very sorry for you because I feel like I’m moaning."

But she added: "It’s just not doing it for me at all."

I'm trying my best here."

Despite this daughter Kat was sold on the property and joked: "If I had the money, I would have bought it already!"

Cutting to the chase, Ben asked: "Are you keen to see more, or are you prepared to hit the road and see what’s in store next?"

"I think it would be pointless looking at anymore," Gilly admitted.

"It’s just not working for me."

Luckily things turned around at the next property and Gilly put in an offer on the fourth house after chatting with her husband.

They offered £210,000 - which was below the asking price - but a deal was happily settled at for £215,000.
