A Place in the Sun’s Laura Hamilton shuts down ‘picky’ couple after one demand too many
A PLACE In The Sun’s Laura Hamilton lost her patience with a “picky” couple on the most recent episode.
Laura was showing around Maggie and Gary who were looking for a retirement home in the French countryside with a budget of £150,000.
They wanted somewhere that could be comfortable for their large family, including 13 grandchildren.
“We’ve rushed about all our lives for different things, our family, our hobbies, and it’s now time that we relaxed and enjoy another culture,” Gary told Laura.
Maggie added: “We’re still young enough and capable enough to enjoy France, we don’t want to wait until we’re old and on crutches.”
Laura decided to first show them a converted barn, but the couple’s reaction was not what she expected.
“It’s… different,” Maggie commented to which Gary agreed, saying it was “very different”.
Laura said to the underwhelmed pair: “Well, you said you had 13 grandchildren and you needed a barn to accommodate them all.
“Well, this is a converted barn, the living accommodation is a little bit flexible as it’s listed as a four-bedroom property, but it could actually have five.”
Falling under their budget at £144,000, they were pleasantly surprised with what the barn had to offer.
Laura asked: “Has it exceeded your expectation though when you say surprised?”
“Yes, definitely, it’s made us think,” Maggie said, and Gary added: “When you look from outside, yes, it’s a barn conversion, but when you get inside, it’s a home.”
Laura asked: “Where do we go from here, and is this a contender?”
Gary replied: “I think it is, the only reserve I have got is the location is a little bit far for walking into the town.”
“Now you’re getting picky, Gary!” said a shocked Laura.
Another property they looked at failed to impress them with Gary even saying, “what are you thinking of Laura?!” and Maggie complaining the kitchen was more of a “pantry not a kitchen”.
They like the third property Laura showed them saying to her “redeemed yourself wonderfully,” and Maggie adding,“this is exactly what we wanted!”
Despite that they decided not to put any offers in at all, leaving Laura feeling disappointed.
“As it’s our final move, you’ve got to think, ‘What’s going to happen in the future?’ The garden I wouldn’t be able to maintain it as I get older,” Gary explained.
“And that would be such a shame because the property lends itself to that garden. At the moment, we could cope with it.”
Laura asked: “Don’t tell me you’re not going to put an offer in on it?”
Maggie replied: “The reason we are not because this is our final move, and we want it to be just right, you know? To be honest, that was spot-on as far as we were concerned.”
“That the first one we’ve seen for real other than looking at various pictures, it’d be nice to say well this is what we want and look a just a few more.”
