Homes Under the Hammer’s Martin Roberts takes shameless swipe at rival show as he reveals secret to his success

Martin said: “Well, I guess until people stop watching it, we'll continue making it!

“Lockdown interestingly enough has introduced quite a few people who wouldn't normally be in a position to watch it, to the show. 

“So we've had the numbers of new viewers has been noticeable.

“It seems to have a perennial interest because I think we do have a genuine interest in the UK.

“I think the thing about Homes Under the Hammer is that it shows normal people doing normal sort of properties."

He added: “There's the Grand Designs of this world which are fantastic shows and everyone loves watching those kind of aspirational things. 

“But translating that into an average person's abilities is possibly not going to happen. 

“But you know you see on Homes Under the Hammer buying £60,00 two up two down terrace, doing it up and they're either making a mess of it or do really well and at the end of it, make a little bit of money or not, or making themselves a really nice home."

With a background in the property market, Martin admitted: “What do I do is I try and give advice, and from my experience and I am a developer, I build houses. 

“So I try to give as much as I can in a brief time and listen to what I say and they can hopefully be inspired to do it. 

“The great things about the show from my point of view, it does give people an opportunity to maybe take that away."

Meanwhile, Channel 4's Grand Designs first launched in 1999.

Presented by Kevin McCloud, 62, he takes a look at ambitious self-builds and projects, as well as individuals who design and construct their new homes.
