The mystery series follows former English teacher Sally Wright, who has spent the past five years in prison for a murder she didn't commit.

Sally's student Matty is found dead after being stabbed with a cider bottle.

Suspicion falls on Sally who had admitted to taking special interest in the troubled boy.

In spite of having no criminal record and no history of violence, Sally was convicted by a majority verdict and sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in jail.

After fresh evidence emerges that places her away from the scene of the crime she is exonerated and is now hell-bent on reclaiming her life and helping the police find Matty's killer.

There are currently no plans in the works for season three as of yet.

Season one aired in May 2018 with the next series not announced until September, so it may be a few months before ITV announces another run of hte hit show.

This makes her then-husband Sam, played by Jamie Bamber, a suspect.

Fans also suspect Sam's fiancé Karen (Priyanga Burford) could be the killer as she had been obsessed with Sam  while he was married to Sally.

Theories point towards Karen killing the boy and pointing the finger at Sally to get her out of the way in order to get to Sam.

Others suggest Karen's daughter Bethany, played by Amy-Leigh Hickman, may be the culprit because Matty had been bullying her in the run-up to his murder.

Anna Stamp (Ellie Rawnsley) is also in the mix as a suspect.

Anna was an ex-girlfriend of Matty's who had become obsessed with him and was so jealous that she thought Sally was sleeping with Matty that she started a rumour about seeing them kiss, which was later proved to be untrue.

Viewers have also pointed the finger at Matty’s parents have already hinted that they have something to hide because they lied to the police during the first murder investigation.

It was revealed that John Taylor (Andrew Tiernan) isn’t Matty’s biological father.

Maria Taylor (Lucy Black) claimed she has no idea who her son’s real dad is, but his identity is revealed in episode three as Gary Walker, played by Jason Done.

It's proved he has an alibi for the murder of his new-found son.

The series will finish tonight - Thursday, May 20, 2021 - at 9pm on ITV.
