EASTENDERS actor Adam Woodyatt has revealed his character Ian Beale won’t be returning to screens until 2022 “at the earliest”.

The actor, 52, is taking a break from the soap to appear in touring theatre production of Looking Dead Good, which could now potentially carry on until next year.

The production was due to start in January but was delayed due to Covid until July.

Adam hopes the missed shows will be rescheduled to the start of 2022, meaning his break is longer than fans had expected.

When asked about his return on The One Show tonight, he said:  “I don’t know. The tour runs until the end of October, my daughter is then getting married in America.

“There is a possibility the tour will carry on until early next year, so if the tour carries on I won’t be back in EastEnders until 2022 at the earliest.”

He was last seen on screen in January, with his character Ian wandering away from Walford in a daze after best-friend-turned-wife Sharon tried to murder him.

Adam is currenlty travelling around the UK in a motor home and plans to use it while on tour because “he doesn’t like hotels”.

He explained: "Because I've been doing this theatre tour, I didn't want to stay in hotels, I'm not a great fan of it.

"I've got friends who spend a lot of time on the road and I just thought, 'I'm gonna get a motor home.

"'I can drive all over the country.'"

Adam is EastEnders longest-serving cast member after joining the soap for its very first episode in 1985.

The One Show airs weeknights, 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
