Will there be a series five of Unforgotten?

ITV has renewed Unforgotten for a fifth season after a shocking series finale which saw the death of protagonist DCI Cassie Stuart.

ITV said in a statement: “ITV would like to thank Nicola Walker for playing the brilliant role of Cassie Stuart in four series of Unforgotten which has become one of the best loved and most critically acclaimed police dramas on TV.

“Nicola and writer Chris Lang decided that Cassie’s story would come to an end last night, but that Unforgotten would continue, in series five, with a new case, and a new ‘Partner in Crime’ for DI Sunny Khan.”

The ITV drama has a star-studded cast with Sanjeev Bhaskar and Nicola Walker playing police detectives Sunil "Sunny" Khan and Cassie Stuart.

Set in and around London, season four sees Cassie teetering on the brink of retirement, displaying the toll the shocking events of season three have taken on her.

Unfortunately, due to harsh changes in HR’s rules, she is forced to complete 12 more weeks of service with the force before she can depart.

Before she can mentally prepare herself for what’s to come, the traumatised DCI is immediately flung back into the horror and drama of her day job after the body of a man is found in grisly circumstances, mere minutes into the first episode.

Having been decapitated and stuffed into a freezer for over 30 years, it is up to Cassie and her intuitive, dry-witted partner, Sunny, to solve the case.

The new case sees the detective duo investigating the lives of former and current serving officers, who were involved in an incident after their passing out parade from Hendon.

In the penultimate episode, Cassie, who has been trying to get hold of her dementia-suffering father, is seen being hit by a vehicle, leading fans to believe she is leaving the show.

The finale revealed the injuries were more severe than initially thought.

Cassie's father and son, Adam, were stunned by the news - and Sunny paid emotional tribute to his workmate in the final moments as he visited her grave.

Sunny makes the final revelation that Dean killed Matthew Walsh, but could not tell Cassie about his finding, because she had lost all brain function.
