Today, the BBC Press Office's official Twitter page delighted fans by revealing series six would consist of seven episodes rather than the typical six, making it the longest in the show's history.

The tweet read: "Listen up, fellas. When the gaffer asks for more, you better deliver. #LineOfDuty returns for Series 6 with an extra episode (7 instead of 6). Coming soon to @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer."

Underneath was a funny video featuring Martin as DS Steve Arnott and Adrian as Supt Ted Hastings.

Steve is seen telling his boss: "Regardless of the personnel involved, Vella's still the highest-profile inquiry engaging this force."

But Ted replies: "I'm gonna need a hell of a lot more before I can authorise a formal inquiry."

When Steve tries to protest, Ted silences him and adds: "I need more."

Steve then suggests: "How about an extra episode, gaffer?" and Ted gives him a knowing smile.

Fans were delighted by the news, with one writing in the comments: "Absolutely fantastic. But please god don’t drop all the episodes at once!"

The news comes after Adrian, 62, teased series six could drop 'in couple of months.'
