Harry Potter fans divided over rumoured TV series – with many fearing the show will ‘ruin their childhoods’

HARRY Potter fans have been completely divided by the rumours of a TV series - as many fear it may "ruin their childhoods".

It comes after Hollywood Reporter claimed that Warner Bros. and HBO Max are in early development of expanding the £19 billion franchise.

The entertainment company and popular streaming service are in very "early-stages" and have been talking with various writers to see if it could be done.

Although close sources told the publication about the meetings, the organisations confirmed that nothing has progressed further other than it being an idea.

They told The Hollywood Reporter: "There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform."

One thing stopping them is creator JK Rowling, 55, who owns copyright on the whole franchise. But if she did go through with it could add another eight figures to her £795 million net worth.

And although it's only in very early stages, many fans couldn't think of anything worse to create and took to Twitter to share their feelings.

One wrote: "That Harry Potter news actually ruined my day I wont lie."

Another said: "I don't want a Harry Potter TV series they're probably gonna ruin it anyway whether it's about the marauders or not please leave things as they are."

A second simply tweeted: "Tbh I don’t want a Harry Potter TV series."

A third tweeted: "Literally cannot think of anything worse than a Harry Potter TV series."

A fourth added: "Ugh why are people trying to ruin such a wonderful movie franchise?? Harry Potter (the original movies) was one of the first movies I remember watching as a child and they’re amazing. There’s no need for a reboot or TV series."

A fifth chimed in: "I can just tell the harry potter TV series is gonna be awful ... just let the movies live with their legacy pls, don’t ruin it."

Meanwhile others seem quite happy about the news.

A fourth added: "My dream has finally come true with a Harry Potter TV series in the works!? It always made me so sad that they left out major/minor plot lines from the books in the movie franchise. I’m honestly so excited! Even if it’s just a spin off I’m so over the moon."

One of the world's most popular franchises of all time was first introduced to the world back in 1997 when author JK Rowling published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Following the huge success of her first book, she went on to write six more novels - Chamber of Secrets, Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows - which followed a young wizard called Harry try to defeat Lord Voldemort.

As of 2018, the books have sold more than 500 million copies worldwide and have been translated into eighty different languages.

Then in 2001 it was decided to make the fantasy novels into a series of films produced and distributed by Warner Bros.

From 2001 to 2011 eight movies were created, with the first called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

The last book was divided into two blockbusters, with the final movie - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 - released in 2011.

The films were just as much as a success as the novels and that is thanks to the exceptional talent played out by the three protagonists: Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.

It has not been made known if the trio will reprise their roles.

Many fans also aren't sure about the news following Rowling's series of anti-trans tweets that she posted back in June 2020.
