MATT Smith 'can't wait to ride dragons' in the Game of Thrones prequel series as he joins House Targaryen.

It was revealed at the weekend that the former Doctor Who and The Crown star had joined the cast of House of the Dragon.

Matt, 38, will play unpredictable Prince Daemon Targaryen in the show, which is set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

During a live-streamed Doctor Who Q&A for GalaxyCon Live on Saturday, Matt was asked about his new role and what he was most looking forward to.

He said: "Well, God, everything. I think it’ll be a really exciting cast.

"I think it’s a wonderful legacy to be a part of and a wonderful world. It’s a great part."

He added: "And without saying too much, I’m just looking forward to riding a few dragons.

"If I get to, I mean I don’t know, who knows. Who knows what sort of goes on in this world."

Matt joined the cast along with Bates Motel actress Olivia Cooke and Truthseekers' Emma D'Arcy.

Olivia will play Alicent Hightower, the daughter of the Hand of the King.

Meanwhile Emma, 28, will star as fierce dragonrider Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the eldest child of the king.

Hot Fuzz actor Paddy Considine plays Prince Daemon's older brother, King Viserys Targaryen.

Production on the prequel, which is an adaptation of A Game of Thrones author George RR Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, will begin next year.
