However, the Prime Minister's latest lockdown announcement was delayed all afternoon and didn't air until 6.50pm.

The national address was originally supposed to take place at 4pm before being moved to 5pm and then pushed back again until 6.30pm.

When he finally appeared on TV, Boris Johnson confirmed reports that the nation would be going back into a second lockdown from Thursday.

The restrictions are set to last for one month until December 2 and will see non-essential shops and hospitality shut and households banned from mixing.

However, schools and universities will stay open, in a change from the first lockdown in spring.

While much of the public will be left downhearted by the new lockdown plans, Strictly viewers were straight up furious that the announcement had disrupted the dancing show, which had provided much needed light relief when it returned last week.

Taking to Twitter, one raged: "Boris hurry the f*** up.. I want to see Strictly!!!"

Another added: "Hey Bojo. The people may forgive incompetence, even corruption. They will not forgive delaying “Strictly”.

A third agreed, writing: "I’ve sussed that #boris is just trying to disrupt #StrictlyComeDancing as he has no support on his own. It’s a low blow … what else do we have these days ! No one puts strictly in the corner."

A fourth shared a screenshot of Boris and wrote: "unless this man is about to start doing a samba, he needs to GO #strictly."

Strictly wasn't the only light entertainment show affected by the announcement, as Little Mix's The Search had to cancel its semi-final this evening.
