This will not be the first time the book has been adapted for film, as Drew Barrymore starred as Charlie McGee back in a 1984 adaptation.

For this new adaptation 34 years, later, it is currently unknown what role Efron, 32, will be playing.

Things are still in the early stages as other casting announcements have yet to be made.

The synopsis for the 1984 adaptation reads: "Charlie McGee is a happy, healthy 8-year-old little girl. Normal in every way but one. She has the power to set objects afire with just one glance.

"It's a power she does not want. It's a power she can't control. And, each night, Charlie prays to be just like every other child.

"But there are those who will do everything in their power to find her, control her... or destroy her. Charlie McGee is Stephen King's Firestarter. Will she have the power... to survive?"

The producers will be Jason Blum and Akiva Goldsman, who previously worked together on the Paranormal Activity franchise.

Keith Thomas will be the director, while Halloween Kills writer Scott Teems has been hired to adapt the script.

Zac made his name in the High School Musical films and fans of the franchise were left angered when the cast got together for reunion back in April- but Zac's vocals were sadly missing from the performance.

The original cast of the hit movie reformed for ABC's fundraiser the Disney Family Singalong - but fans were devastated when Zac failed to sing and only introduced them.

Original stars including , 31, Ashley Tisdale, 34, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman and Lucas Grabeel showed off their exceptional voices in the virtual gig - but lead man Zac was absent from the performance.

The cast did a heartwarming rendition of We're All In This Together from the original movie.

A release date for Firestarter has not yet been confirmed.
