Bake Off pulled in 10.8m viewers — making it C4’s most watched show since 1985

BAKE Off’s return was seen by 10.8million viewers — making it Channel 4’s most watched programme since 1985.

The audience on the night of 6.9million was also the show’s highest since moving from BBC in 2016.

The figure of nearly 11million includes those who watched repeats or catch-up on Channel 4, E4 and 4Seven plus on-demand service All 4.

Mini-series A Woman of Substance still has the channel’s highest viewing figure at 13.9million in 1985.

Bake Off started late to avoid clashing with a Covid address to the nation from the PM.

New host Matt Lucas opened with an impersonation of Boris Johnson behind a podium saying: “Stay Alert, Protect Cake, Save Loaves.”
