Coronation Street star to front ITV’s Innocent season 2 as teacher accused of sleeping with teenage student

EX-CORONATION Street star Katherine Kelly will front season two of ITV's Innocent as a teacher accused of sleeping with a teenage student.

The first series of the ITV drama aired in 2018 and focused on a man - played by Criminal's Lee Ingleby - being charged with killing his wife.

For season two, Katherine, 40, will play a teacher called Sally Wright, who is accused of having sex with 16-year-old student Matty Taylor.

To make matters worse, Matty is then found murdered, having been stabbed with a broken beer bottle, and Sally ends up being convicted of his murder.

She is sentenced to 15 years in prison, but once inside, new evidence comes to light which could prove her innocence.

Sally is determined to clear her name having already lost her job, husband and home, but will she be able to prove what really happened to Matty?

Of her new role, Katherine said: "I'm thrilled to be working on this complex and thrilling drama by Matt Arlidge and Chris Lang.

"I look forward to bringing the mix of Sally's fragility and quiet strength to life."

 ITV Drama Commissioner Huw Kennair Jones added: "Innocent II is a thriller which keeps you guessing to the very end.

"Chris and Matt's brilliant scripts are compelling and the characters incredibly relatable."

The cast for the second season also includes Nadia Albina, Amy-Leigh Hickman, Priyanga Burford, Shaun Dooley, Lucy Black and Michael Yare.

Season one also starred Cold Feet's Hermione Norris and Normal People's Finn O'Shea and saw Lee's character acquitted for the murder of his wife because of a legal technicality.
