THE first trailer for sci-fi blockbuster Dune starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya promises Star Wars on steroids.
Based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert, Dune follows Oscar Isaac's character Duke Leto Atredies as he accepts stewardship on the desert planet Arrakis – aka Dune.
Arrakis is the only source of 'the spice', the most valuable substance in the universe thanks to its abilities to prolong human life and provide superhuman abilities.
Leto brings along his son Paul - played by Timothee - and his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson).
As Leto takes charge of the mining operation for the spice, Paul and Jessica soon meet the Fremen, Arrakis' natives who live deep in the desert.
The family's arrival on the island sparks plenty of action and danger, with large scale battles and hand to hand combat all featuring in the trailer as well as space ships and giant sandworms that protect the spice.
However, Paul soon learns of his own powers and appears to find love with Zendaya's character Chani, with the pair sharing a kiss in one clip from the trailer.
Speaking at a Q&A with Stephen Colbert alongside the preview, Timothee said of the film: "There is a metaphor, and I think a lesson in this movie for everyone."
Co-star Jason Momoa added: "This film set the bar in how I want to have my career go. I learned so much every day and I laughed constantly. I felt beautiful."
The film is set to be the first in a two-part adaptation of the book, which has been described as the best science-fiction novel of all time.
