Gavin and Stacey’s Ruth Jones dodges question about writing brand new series in lockdown with James Corden

GAVIN and Stacey’s Ruth Jones managed to cleverly dodge a question about whether she had used lockdown to write more episodes of her BBC One comedy show.

After the success of the 2019 Christmas special, fans have been eager to know if there would be further instalments of the series.

Appearing on The One Show, host Alex Jones asked the actress and writer if there was any truth to claims that she and co-creator James Corden had been using this lockdown to write another series.

Considering the question, Ruth paused before replying.

She then said: “Do you know I could comment and it will be in the press tomorrow, so I’m gonna let people speculate.”

Ruth then added that it would be tricky for her to ‘bubble’ with James and pen more episodes in the pandemic as he lives in the US.

The actress, who stars as Nessa in the show, recently said in an interview that it wasn’t just distance that had been a factor when it came to collaborating during lockdown.

Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Ruth said: “James and I did Zoom a few times. But we didn’t do any writing. In fact, I remember us both saying how uncreative we both felt.

“And since then we’ve not even mentioned work, just talked about the family and how we’re feeling. It does seem like a waste doesn’t it, not to have spent all those lockdown hours writing? But I just couldn’t get into the groove.”

Gavin star Matthew Horne backed up Ruth’s feelings towards writing remotely.

The 41-year-old told Digital Spy: "It's almost impossible really for James and Ruth to write any more at the moment considering the lockdown situation because they don't like to write remotely.

"They always have to be in the same room, and that's certainly not been possible for a long while now."

He continued: "So any rumours that there are… I heard a rumour from one of my friends the other day that we’re making another Christmas special this year, which is ridiculous.

"But no, I have had no conversations about it other than I really don't think that personally, my personal view, is I don't think that James and Ruth can possibly leave it where it is.

"Because, you know, we left it on a cliffhanger and I don't think it would be right to leave it there.

"But I'm only speculating, I have no idea. I think when logistics and time permit, they may get their heads together but I don't know when that will be."
