Speaking in a recent interview, actor Danny Dyer discussed how he felt when he discovered his EastEnders character would be upping sticks.

He said: “I think when we were first told, a little bit gutted. This is what we know, and it’s the hub of the show.

“There’s a huge responsibility of running it and the amount you’re involved in but I do think it was time for a changing of the guard. And who better than Sharon, come on?”

The Football Factory star also admitted during his chat with Metro.co.uk that it now feels like his character has a new lease of life.

Danny explained: “I’m having a vast new experience of being in EastEnders and not being in the Vic and I’ve gotta say, I’m enjoying it. It’s nice, I’m working on different sets and with different people.

“It’s almost like coming to a new job. It’s a lot more difficult filming in the Vic due to corona – I think it was time.

“Seven years is a long time, so we needed to freshen it up slightly. We’re all enjoying ourselves. You do get territorial over your character so you have fears – "we haven’t got the Vic anymore, what you gonna do with us?

“But it’s time to explore different parts of the characters; I’m not just a landlord any more and we’re all going down some different, nutty routes and I’ve been buzzing off it.

“Let’s see what the future brings but at the moment we’re enjoying floating about the Square!”

EastEnders will officially be back on Monday, September 7 and from then on, the soap will be airing four nights a week at the slightly shorter length of twenty minutes.

The news will be a relief for viewers, who have been left hanging after the finale on Tuesday, June 16, ended on a huge cliffhanger.

Fans were left speechless as Sharon Mitchell and Ian Beale swooped in to buy the Queen Vic, leaving Sharon's ex-husband and prospective buyer Phil Mitchell raging and setting the scene nicely for the soap’s famous doof doof theme tune.

Speaking about the return of EastEnders, Executive Producer Jon Sen said: “From the moment we turned the lights out in The Queen Vic our ambition was to come back with a bang and this autumn certainly does that."
