How can I watch Spitting Image?

SPITTING Image, the much loved British satirical puppet show that first aired in 1984, has returned for a brand new series.

24 years after it last hit screens, the show will point fun and dig at some of the world's biggest names in modern politics and pop culture.

Back in its heyday, Spiting Image was a cultural success having received both critical acclaim and praise from the public.

During its 12 year run, the show won four BAFTAs and four Emmys and boasted of having 15 million viewers at its height of popularity.

It's focus back then was more tightly on British politicians and royalty, such as Margaret Thatcher.

When is Spitting Image returning?

Spitting Image is available to watch from today (October 3, 2020) on BritBox, the streaming service created by the BBC and ITV.

The much anticipated series is Britbox's first original commission - and it's already had the green light for a second series arriving in 2021.

The creators behind the cheeky satire show said: "With the world getting smaller and more turbulent, the time couldn't be more appropriate for an iconic British satirical take on global events."

Executive producer Roger Law has said the global focus in characters won't impact on the British satirical style.

"The new Spitting Image will be global through a uniquely British eye, it will be more outrageous, audacious and salacious than the previous incarnation."

He has refused to resuscitate the show the for years, but in the current climate it seems like a good time - that, and he joking said "my pension ran out".

What has been the reaction?

The announcement of the Spitting Image coming to the streaming platform has excited many.

One fan on Twitter wrote: “After recently watching the box set of the entire original Spitting Image 30 odd years after first watching and loving it, I cannot wait for the new series.”

While another added: "Cannot wait for this. We need some satire rn!"!

However, one skeptical fan wrote: "The funniest thing about the new spitting image is it’s on britbox and only about 1000 people will ever see it."
