GUARDS were hired to lock down Thomas Cook premises with the firm hours from collapse.

The travel operator faces going bust at 11.59pm on Sunday night unless £200million can be secured to pay creditors.

Security were due to be posted at its Peterborough HQ and hubs at Birmingham, Bristol and East Mids airports.

And 200 call centre staff will help with the £600million repatriation of 200,000 Brits.

A rep in Spain admitted: “Passengers are panicking.”

Matt Varley and Joanne Bancroft, of Nottingham, have booked a £60,000 wedding for 38 guests in Mexico.

Joanne, 46, said: “It’s a nightmare. We have called 12 times but Thomas Cook haven’t got in touch.”
